Summer Disc Golf Tips: Beat the Heat & Play Your Best

Summer is one of the best times of the year to get out and throw a round. Longer days mean more opportunities to play, tournaments are in full swing, and it’s the perfect season to introduce friends and family to disc golf.

But playing in 90°+ temperatures comes with its own challenges. Heat, dehydration, sweaty hands, and fatigue can all affect your game. Here are some of our favorite ways to stay comfortable and keep your scores low all summer long.

1. Hydration Starts Before Your Round

One of the biggest mistakes players make is waiting until they’re thirsty to drink water. By then, you’re already behind.

Start hydrating a few hours before tee time and continue drinking throughout the round. If you’re playing in extreme heat, adding electrolytes can help replace what you’re losing through sweat.

Pro Tip: Freeze a bottle of water the night before so you have cold water throughout the round.

2. Keep Your Grip Dry

Nothing ruins a drive faster than a slippery release.

A small towel clipped to your bag is one of the best investments you can make during the summer. Many players also carry multiple towels, one for discs and another for sweaty hands.

If you struggle with grip, consider keeping a chalk bag or grip enhancer in your bag.

3. Dress for the Weather

Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing can make a huge difference during a long tournament or casual round.

Look for:

  • Light-colored shirts
  • Breathable fabrics
  • A comfortable hat
  • UV-protective sunglasses

The cooler you stay, the longer you’ll maintain your focus.

4. Protect Your Skin

Even if it’s cloudy, UV rays can still do damage.

Don’t forget:

  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • A hat
  • Sunglasses

Your future self will thank you after several hours on the course.

5. Take Advantage of Early Morning or Evening Rounds

One of the best parts about summer is the extra daylight.

Playing before work or heading out for an evening glow round lets you avoid the hottest part of the day while enjoying some of the most beautiful conditions of the season.

There’s something special about watching the sun set while chasing birdies.

6. Choose the Right Discs

Hot weather doesn’t necessarily change your discs—but wind often does.

Summer afternoons frequently bring stronger winds, making stable and overstable discs more reliable when accuracy matters.

If you’re looking to add something dependable to your bag, stop by Smash & Tap Discs. We’d love to help you find the right disc for your game, whether you’re a brand-new player or chasing your next tournament win.

7. Listen to Your Body

Heat exhaustion can sneak up on anyone.

If you begin feeling dizzy, nauseous, unusually fatigued, or stop sweating, it’s time to take a break. Find shade, drink fluids, and cool down before continuing your round.

No scorecard is worth risking your health.
